Background

Which format for what?

  • JPG is the standard format for photos. Almost every app and upload form accepts it, but it has no transparency.
  • PNG is lossless and supports transparent backgrounds. It suits logos, screenshots and graphics you want to keep editing.
  • WebP was developed for the web. It usually stores photos and graphics in smaller files than JPG or PNG, and it can be transparent as well.
  • HEIC is the iPhone’s photo format. It saves storage, but many programs outside the Apple world can’t open it. The tools read HEIC but don’t save to it.

Most tools convert to exactly one format. On “Convert images” you choose the target yourself. If you mix input formats, the converter identifies each file by its contents.
